So sorry for the loss of my favorite cook while I was in the Coast Guard! I was stationed aboard the Cutter Mahoning out of Governors Island New York and came on board in April 1978 and welcomed aboard by Joe and the skipper stating that I was about to take over cooking duties while Joe was dealing with a skin illness. Being Italian and having a few family recipes up my sleeve helped them to make that decision. Joe was by my see side the entire time. He showed me his recipes and how to navigate the commissary with his connections there. The only thing he wasn’t giving up was the Friday morning runs to The Fulton St Fish Market for our Friday seafood lunches.
He was a great friend and and took very good care of me.
Rest in Peace Joe and thank you!

Joe relieved me at Coast Guard Station Ponce De Leon Inlet, FL in 1975 when he was a SS2. I'm sorry to hear he passed. Fair winds and following seas Joe.

I just read the sad news about Joe in the latest issue of the U.S. Coast Guard Retiree Newsletter Jan - March 2019 issue ("TAPS" section). I was one of Joe's shipmates, also a fellow 1st class petty officer at the time aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Steadfast. I was aboard STEADFAST from 1983-1986. Joe was a lot of fun, & he & I (along with several of our other 1st class "Coasties") often played poker in our berthing compartment when we were off duty underway on law enforcement patrols, generally in the Caribbean somewhere. I KNOW that Joe was very proud of his family as he mentioned them & especially his Wife often while he was taking all of my money over the poker table (hee-hee) - Joe was good & also lucky when it came to playing poker. I KNOW that his loss must have been devastating to his family! Had I known that he lived so close to where I now live, I would have made contact & stopped by for a visit - maybe even another game of poker!
