Alan Mitchell Thomas' Obituary
Alan Mitchell Thomas of Belleair, Florida passed away on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 surrounded by his family. He was a loving husband; a beloved father, brother, son, and friend; a patriotic veteran; an accomplished real estate professional; a creative and frugal-minded problem solver; a tinkerer and a treasure hunter; and a menace to fish throughout the Gulf of Mexico.
Alan was born to Norman and Robert Thomas on June 27, 1947 in Atlanta, Georgia. He spent most of his childhood in Columbus and Rome, Georgia, during which his grandparents taught him to fish and he developed his love for outdoor adventures and misadventures, alongside his brother Bob. He attended Georgia Tech, where he studied Industrial Management and ensured his dorm room was as close as possible to The Varsity and their famous chili dogs.
Upon graduation from Georgia Tech, Alan was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy and flew A3s during the Vietnam War. His time in the Navy and the friendships he developed there were some of his fondest memories, and his family and friends continue to laugh that – despite his flight training – Alan remained fearful of heights. After the Navy, Alan moved to Florida with his wife Socorro. He spent the majority of his professional career working for Family Mart and The Sembler Company, developing shopping centers throughout central and south Florida.
An avid fisherman, Alan was most at peace on the water. He had many and varied hobbies – from fishing to collecting seashells to birding – most of which can be described as “treasure hunting.” He delighted in planning his excursions as much as the excursion itself, a trait he passed onto his three children, and was rarely without a “project.” He relished the feeling of being useful to his family and friends, although his creative and ingenious “solutions” to everyday problems often resulted in calling in the professionals.
Alan is survived by his loving wife of 39 years and greatest treasure, Socorro Capo Thomas; three children, Ana Maria (Michael O’Neill), Allison (Timothy Thayer), and Matthew, of whom he was very proud and who remain so very proud of him; three grandchildren, Willa, Manolo, and James; his beloved brother Bob (Sue Thomas); many brothers and sisters in law and nieces and nephews; and countless loyal friends from throughout his life.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Cecelia Catholic Church at 1pm on Friday, January 27. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations in Alan’s memory can be directed toward the Seaside Seabird Sanctuary in Indian Shores, Florida, or a charity of your choice.
