Alice McCullough's Obituary
Alice McCullough, of Clearwater, FL and Dudley, MA, passed away on her 88th birthday, Sunday, January 8th, 2023. Born in Brandenburg, Germany, one of five children of Rudolf and Olga Milewski. Her sisters Erna, Alma and Gertrude predeceased her. She leaves behind her youngest brother, Heinz, of Germany. Alice was predeceased by her first husband and father of her two children, Adam Zado. She was predeceased by her second husband Owen R. McCullough and leaves behind his children, Melinda, Christopher and Danna. Alice was lucky enough to be absolutely loved and adored by not only one man in her lifetime, but two. She leaves behind two daughters, Veronika (Zado) McCrery, of Dunedin, FL and Heidi (Zado) Saad, of Oxford, MA. Alice was incredibly proud of her four grandchildren; Sean O’Riley, Jamie Oakes, Malissa Saad and Michael Saad Jr..
In 1955, she married her first husband, Adam. They worked together in a shoe factory. That same year they welcomed their first daughter, Veronika. Alice was the only one of five siblings to leave her hometown and come across the pond to find the “American Dream.” Alice and Adam owned and operated a laundromat and Zado’s Shoe Store. In 1968, they welcomed their second daughter, Heidi. They opened Heidi’s German Restaurant, where the whole family worked. The restaurant thrived. When Adam passed from a stroke in 1975, she became a hard working single mother of two. She then met Bob (Owen R.) McCullough, aka G-Bob, in 1996 and remarried shortly thereafter.
When Alice finally retired, she channeled her working energy to new things. Her grandchildren were the light of her life and she spent most days with Malissa and Michael Jr., who she then lived with for 15 years, before moving to Florida full time. She was an animal lover, though she wouldn’t admit it. She loved playing tennis, shuffleboard, table pool, going to dances, gardening, hosting pool parties for the neighborhood, cooking and baking all her homemade specialties- sausage bread, goolash, liverwurst sandwiches, pancakes, apple muffins or periogis. She would never, ever, let you leave the house hungry.
Alice was the most loyal New England sports fan. You could always find her on her comfy chair every night, yelling at the Red Sox or Patriots games.
To know Alice was to love her. She was the most generous and caring mother, sister, grandmother, friend and “Omi” to all. She will be greatly missed and in our hearts and souls forever. She has made such a positive and lasting impact on every person she has met along her way.
There will be no memorial services as Alice has chosen to donate her body to the University of Florida for further research on Alzheimer’s disease. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to an Alzheimer’s charity of your choice.
