My grandmother dedicated many years of her life to caring for others as a healthcare aide (CNA) in Cuba, where she was known for her compassion, strong work ethic, and commitment to those in need. She was also a talented cook who lovingly provided for her family. After the passing of my grandfather, she showed remarkable strength and devotion by raising and caring for their five children on her own.
After moving to the United States, she continued her life’s calling of service by working as a babysitter and as a private aide, caring for elderly individuals in their homes. She found great purpose in helping others, and her kindness, patience, and generosity touched the lives of many families.
She had a deep love for life’s simple joys, especially her coffee and music. A warm cup of coffee was never just a drink—it was her moment of peace, often shared in conversation, laughter, or quiet reflection. Music filled her home and her heart, and she especially loved listening to Orquesta Aragón, whose songs brought her happiness and reminded her of her homeland.
Above all, my abuela gave us the greatest gift: her faith in Jesus. She was the one who accompanied me to Mass, teaching by example what it meant to live with love, humility, and devotion. She was deeply devoted to Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre, and each year we attended Mass at St. Lawrence to celebrate her with prayer and gratitude. Her faith guided her life and became a light for her children and grandchildren.

One day with my mom that we will never forget is the day she flew to the United States. My family and I went to the Camagüey airport to say goodbye to her, and it was an extremely difficult moment. We were deeply worried about her well-being in a foreign country. She knew only a couple of friends who could help her begin a new life.
At that time, she had recently developed diabetes, a health condition that made adapting even harder. She was an adult with no special skills, no university degree, and no knowledge of the language or culture. Starting over so far away from her family felt almost impossible. Despite all these limitations, my mom was convinced she would succeed. She believed she could build a better future and one day reunite our family.
Watching her walk away that day was heartbreaking, but it was also the moment we truly understood her strength. A couple of years later, we reunited with our mom and shared many years filled with her love and compassion. Beyond the family values she taught us—respect, honesty, and support—the greatest lesson she left us was perseverance: never give up, and believe that there is no obstacle in life that cannot be overcome. Always fight to make your dreams come true, just as she did.
