Paul Gandolfi
What to write? Well, at the beginning, I suppose. I met Bobby Powell at EI/SquareD, way back in '75. I had heard his name mentioned by many, but had not met him. Things like "Bobby Powell said this" or "Bobby Powell did that", or "Bobby wants this done". My impression was of an imposing guy, who would take no crap (can I say that?) from anyone. When I finally met him, I was surprised to find a friendly and jovial fellow, always respectful, yet tough when necessary. He was always available for discussion and to give advice. Our relationship continued after I left Square D to go to TRC. Bobby joined us a few weeks later. We developed a close working relationship and would often go to lunch together. He introduced me to Beans and Franks, on the Sonny's menu. A meal which I still order and enjoy to this day. So, when I see those two large frankfurter's on the plate, I think of Bobby. Thanks Bobby!
Bobby had the enviable ability to convince anyone that he was being perfectly serious about anything, even when telling an obvious joke. I have never met a person with the ability to keep such a straight face. He would have been brilliant in any sales position.
One time, Bobby, Darla, Cindy and I went to the rattlesnake festival in San Antonio. During the drive there, he pointed out an unusual animal, calling it a Beefalo (spelling), which, he claimed, was a cross between a Buffalo and a Cow. Yeah right, I thought. Determined not to fall for another one, I refused to believe the story. Darned if I didn't find out later that there are such creatures. Had to "eat crow" on that one.
His photograph on this page is perfect. Although there was a (necessary) tough side to Bobby, the photo captures his true personality. The way that all of us will remember him.
To Darla, Mike, Glenn and Jerry, and all his family. Cindy and I send our sincere condolences for your loss.
Paul and Cindy Gandolfi.
