Carl J LeGrand's Obituary
Carl LeGrand, 87
Carl Jacob LeGrand, 87, of Clearwater, Florida, passed away peacefully, Monday, July 4, 2016.
A celebration of his life will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, July 9 at Unity Clearwater, 2465 Nursery Rd, Clearwater, FL 33764. Minister Leddy Hammock will be officiating.
Carl was born February 13, 1929 in Florence, South Carolina to Walter and Agnes (Danzler) LeGrand. On February 18, 1950 he married Mattie Lou Dickinson in Charleston, SC. He joined the Merchant Marines at 16 and then the Army Air Corp at 18. He spent 24 years in active duty including 1 tour in Korea and 2 tours in Viet Nam. After he was honorably discharged from the Air Force he continued to work in several occupations including a state park ranger in Myrtle Beach, SC. Carl was passionate about nature and animals. There were few people he didn’t like but there was no animal he didn’t love.
As a decorated soldier, Carl saw many terrible things in life and war. None of this changed the fact that he was an infectiously kind and loving person. He would help a stranger as quickly as a friend and he always had a nice word to say and a quick wink with his laughing eyes. He was a hero to his grandkids who called him Daddy-Dog or Daddy-Duck because he always had a menagerie of some kind of animal he was caring for. His love of life will leave a wonderful legacy.
Carl is survived by his Wife Lou, his son Jay LeGrand and wife Mary; granddaughters Danielle Zecher and husband Nicholas, and Garbielle LeGrand. , and his daughter Diana Ector and husband Lane Ector, granddaughter Briana Fernandez and husband Brent, step-granddaughter Jordan Lykens and husband Steven, and step-grandson Austin Ector.
