Carlyne Morrison Heilman's Obituary
Carlyne Elizabeth Morrison Heilman was born on August 24, 1923, in Ft. Meade, FL, to Carlyne Carlton Lowe Morrison and George Washington Morrison. She is preceded by her father George Washington Morrison, her mother, Carlyne Lowe Morrison, her Aunts Mary and Ruth Lowe, her brother George W. Morrison, her husband Frank Albert Heilman, and a great-granddaughter, Halle Grace Heilman.
She is survived by her son, F. Allan (Kathleen) of Belleair, FL, and three grandsons: Mark A. (Ann K.), of Carmel, IN, John W. (Jillian L.) of Valrico, FL, and Michael J. (Laura E.) of Chicago, IL, and six great-grandchildren, several nephews, nieces, and many cousins.
Carlyne’s father died when she was seven months old. She and her brother, George, were brought up by their two Aunts, Ruth and Mary Lowe of Banner Elk, NC. She had polio at age two. Until she got to high school, her Aunt Mary took her and her brother to Florida in the winter to be with their mother and to go to school. The summers were spent in Banner Elk, NC.
She graduated from Cranberry Consolidated High School, Cranberry, NC, as Valedictorian at age fourteen and from Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk in 1940 as Valedictorian and a member of Phi Theta Kappa. She graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College (now Appalachian State University) in 1942 with a degree in Science and English. She went back to Lees-McRae College to complete studies to become a Medical Records Librarian. She was employed at Biltmore Hospital in Asheville, NC, until 1944.
She married Frank Albert Heilman on December 23, 1943, in Lexington, KY, where he was assigned to the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) at the University of Kentucky. Their only child, F. Allan, was born in Banner Elk in December, 1944.
After discharge from the Army, Frank graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1947 and they moved to Beacon, NY, where Frank worked for Texaco. In 1949, they moved to Oak Ridge, TN, where Frank was a development engineer at the Gaseous Diffusion Plant which enriched uranium.
Carlyne enjoyed her bridge club and loved flowers and gardening. At one time she did quite a bit of oil painting. She and her husband traveled extensively in the U. S., Canada and Mexico. They were members of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church. After Frank’s death in January, 2013, she moved to The Palms of Largo to be near her son.
The service will be by Pastor Joe Glymph at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 455 Missouri Avenue, Largo, FL, on Sunday, July 22, at 3:00 PM. The interment will be in Banner Elk, NC.
