Danny Benefield's Obituary
BENEFIELD, Danny Dale, 65, of Dunedin, died in New Orleans, LA on Feb. 29, 2016 with his daughter at his side. He was born in Clearwater on April 27, 1950 and graduated from Dunedin High School in 1968 before attending the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT. After receiving his helicopter pilot license at Eglin Air Force Base, Danny flew drug interdictions as well as search and rescue missions. He retired from the Coast Guard in 1994, with the rank of CDR. Following his retirement, he pursued another passion, teaching Math. He taught at schools in New Orleans and, following Katrina in 2005, came to Dunedin to teach at his alma mater, DHS. In addition to flying and teaching, Danny had a passion for outdoor activities including kayaking, camping, hiking, and walks on the beach. Although he was quiet and contemplative, Danny had a wonderful sense of humor and a contagious laugh. He inspired others with his huge heart, humble nature, love of family, and his generous spirit. Danny touched the lives of everyone he met in the most positive ways; each person is better for having known him. As a long standing member of the Palm Harbor Church of Christ, Danny had a deep faith in God, studying His word on a regular basis to strengthen the bond they shared. He is survived by three loving children, Sarah Vincent, of New Orleans, LA, Daniel Benefield, and Brian Benefield, both of Ruskin; son-in-law, Keith Vincent; an adoring mother, Oleene Benefield; a proud sister, Rita Milavsky, both of Dunedin; brother-in-law, Joe Milavsky; four nieces, and one nephew: Leanne, Kathryn, Alexandra, Rachel, and Jesse; many friends, and a loving confidant, Shirley Celidonio. He was preceded in death by his father, Dan F. Benefield. Danny was loved more than words can express and, although we are grateful for the time we shared with him and blessed to have been a part of his life, he will be profoundly missed. His passing leaves an enormous hole in our lives that can only be assuaged by our heartfelt memories. In lieu of flowers, please support the woundedwarriorproject.org
