Donald "Don" R. Shaffer's Obituary
Donald Robert Shaffer, 92, of Dunedin, Florida passed away on November 18, 2021. He was born in South Bend, Indiana in June of 1929, to the late Adolph David Shaffer and Pearl Edna (Huey) Shaffer. Don graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington with a major in Personnel Management. Thereafter he served as a Sergeant in the United States Army during the Korean War. Following his service, Don worked as a project manager for National Homes. He moved his family to Florida in 1972 and soon after began his career as Director of Purchasing at Innisbrook Resort. Don worked for Pinellas County in various jobs and finally retired from his favorite position as the Lead Purchasing Agent at Pinellas County Clerk of the Court. He served as Dunedin City Commissioner from 1984-1990. He and his wife Donna were also long-time members of First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin where he was an usher for 40+ years.
In addition to his parents, Don is predeceased by five sisters and one brother, his wife of 67 years, and sons Scott and Kevin Shaffer. Don is survived by sons Mark, Mitch, Andy Shaffer and daughter Susan Aljian, 15 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Don was an avid traveler, gardener, birdwatcher, and Tampa Bay Rays fan. While living in Indiana he attended the Indianapolis 500 Auto Race for 24 consecutive years!
Don will be remembered fondly for imparting his thoughtful wisdom through his calm, optimistic demeanor.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, December 5, 2021 at 2:00 pm at Moss Feaster Funeral Home, 1320 Main Street, Dunedin, FL. “In lieu of flowers, Don requested donations be made to First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin, Metropolitan Ministries, or Suncoast Hospice.
