Donald Lee Francett's Obituary
In Loving Memory of Donald Lee Francett
August 22, 1946 – June 2nd, 2025
Donald Lee Francett, a devoted father, loving grandfather, great grandfather, and proud Navy Veteran passed away in St. Petersburg, Florida, surrounded by family, with love and support.
Born in Easton, Pennsylvania, on August 22, 1946, Don moved to St. Petersburg when he was just five years old. He was the youngest of three boys and grew up with a sharp wit, a kind heart, and a tireless work ethic that would define his life. A proud graduate of Boca Ciega High School and St. Petersburg College, Don went on to earn an associate degree before beginning a long and dedicated career as a printing press operator.
Don proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, where he earned the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. He served with honor and humility, never one to boast, but always ready to share a story (often with a punchline).
He was a single father before it was common, raising his daughter, Dawn, on his own. Don worked hard every single day to provide for his children - Donnie Wayne Francett and Dawn Gayle Francett - who were nine years apart in age but equally loved. He was a constant source of dad jokes, life advice, and unwavering support.
Don was a man of few words, but when he spoke, it mattered and was sure to include way to make you smile. His advice was simple, wise, and straight from the heart. He couldn’t tell a lie if he tried - and wouldn’t even consider it. He was a loyal friend, a great listener, and the kind of man whose presence made people feel calm, cared for, and seen.
His passions in life were many:
He loved to cook and grill, and was famous among family and friends for his legendary BBQ chicken - a recipe he perfected over the years and proudly passed down to his daughter. He also enjoyed hiking, camping, bird watching, and cheering on Formula One, IndyCar, and NASCAR races in person in the stands or from his favorite recliner.
His passion for cars went far beyond the ordinary. He took it a step further and became a rally race car driver where he found tremendous confidence and success. For years, he won countless trophies that filled his home with pride and that journey led him to taking the wheel as President of the British Car Club of Tampa Bay (B.A.E.).
Don is survived by his son Donnie, daughter Dawn, three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Though he has left this world, his humor, wisdom, and unconditional love live on in every story, every laugh, and every family gathering.
He wanted his service to be a celebration of life. Don wasn’t one for overly emotional displays, as he preferred smiles over tears and jokes over speeches. More than anything, he wanted his family together, sharing memories, flipping through old photo albums, and remembering how short life is and just how important it is to live it fully with the ones we love most.
