Doris M. Hinson's Obituary
DORIS HAYNES HINSON
December 12, 1924 to May 16, 2019.
Doris was born on December 12, 1924 on Young Street in Marshalltown, Iowa. Her father was Ross J Haynes and her mother was Edith Handorf Haynes. Each parent was also born in Iowa.
Doris had two sisters and two brothers. Their names were Evelyn, Betty, Earl, and James.
The Haynes family moved to Dunedin, Florida in the 1920’s to do home building when there was a housing boom. After that fell off, they started a honey business. They did very well and developed the House and Haynes Honey brand and specialized in palmetto honey. They won many awards for their honey products at the county and state fairs in Florida.
Doris was in the 4H Club as a child and won awards at the county fair. She played coronet in the Dunedin Junior High School Band. She also became the class valedictorian there.
Another skill was playing the piano. She often played hymns for the Sunday School classes at the First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin, Florida where she started attending as a small child. During the 1950’s and 1960’s she sang in the church choir. She taught Sunday School for many years.
Doris married Ralph Hinson in Dunedin, Florida at the First Presbyterian Church. They raised four children who are all still living. There is a daughter, Thelma, and three sons named Clifford, Daniel, and Albert. Her legacy lives on with 7 Grandchildren, 15 Great-grandchildren and 5 Great-Great Grandchildren. Doris birthed all of her babies in Mease Hospital in Dunedin. Dr. Mease was the doctor who delivered three of her four children. That hospital is the same one in which she later passed away.
Doris and Ralph became airplane pilots and bought their own airplane in the 1940’s. They kept it in a hangar at the Dunedin Airport. The airplane was destroyed when a fire swept through the airport and destroyed everything.
Once the children were all attending school, Doris started college. First, she attended St. Petersburg Junior College and then she graduated with her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Tampa. She became a school teacher and taught many years at North Ward Elementary School of Clearwater, Florida. After her retirement there, she taught at a Christian Elementary School.
One of her favorite memories was of attending the Plant City Strawberry festival with her husband Ralph when she rode there on the back of his motorcycle. This was remarkable because of both the distance traveled and their mature years.
