Evelyn Margaret Shambaugh's Obituary
Evelyn Margaret (Buchanan) (McKean) Shambaugh
August 27, 1922 - May 11, 2015
Dunedin Florida
Evelyn was born in Frobisher, Saskatchewan, Canada to the late Harry and Gertrude Buchanan. While growing up she learned to paint, play the piano, and play the violin (even playing violin in the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra a number of years after they moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan). She graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelors Degree and started working as a Medical Records Librarian with the University of Michigan after she graduated
She moved to Maryland to work for National Institute of Health in 1961. While working for NIH she helped set up the SEER Program for cancer surveillance (writing training manuals, training member hospitals on how to collect cancer statistics, and helping write the books that were generated from those statistics). During that time she also went to the University of Maryland and earned her Masters Degree. She was one of the founding members, and past presidents, of the National Cancer Registrars Association and was also a member of the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries. She retired at age 70 only because of her heart or else she might have still been working at the job she loved.
She moved to her beloved Dunedin, Florida in July of 1996 in a 2-bedroom condo overlooking St. Joseph sound. She was an active member of AAUW, the Pinellas Opera League, and 2 book clubs. She also served on her condo HOA Board of Directors. She loved traveling and continued to do so after retirement. In 2009 she moved to Mease Manor Independent Living.
Her marriage to Charles E McKean ended in divorce while living in Michigan. She was married to Harold S Shambaugh from April 16th, 1962 until his death on August 15th, 1995. She is survived by her son Philip A McKean (Francoise), her step-daughter Karen Van Deventer, and her step-son David Shambaugh (Sharon) (their children Laura and Jonathan).
She is scheduled to be buried with her husband, Harold, at Arlington Cemetery on September 24, 2015 at 10 am.
