Frank was my "shark tooth" hunting buddy in Myrtle Beach. He always beat me finding the biggest one. Frank, you will always be remembered as a great friend and expert hunter.
If you grew up in the west end of Floral Park, NY you knew the Stroehleins. How could you not. With 5 boys starting with Steve, Danny, Tim, Jeff and Jimmy there was a good chance you had 1 of the 5 in your class and even if you didn’t all 5 boys were involved in sports so if you didn’t know them in school you knew them on the football field, basketball court, baseball field or track.
And sports is where I got to know Mr. Stroehlein. Mr. Stroehlein coached Little League for a number of years and although I never had him as a direct coach I did have him as a coach for the traveling team which was also coached by other dads like Mr. Desmond, Mr. Lynch, Mr. Esposito, Mr. Clark and many others throughout the years.
What made Mr. Stroehlein stand out among these great dads was his dedication to making us kids better players and first and foremost enjoying the greatest game on the planet — BASEBALL. The time he took day in and day out was more than anyone needed to put in but he did and we all benefited with the extra infield practice, batting practice and just learning the rules of the game. You got to remember most of us kids weren’t even teenagers yet. And I will say from memory that Mr. Stroehlein could be tough at times but he always had our best interests at heart because he wanted us to succeed so he worked us hard during practice and speaking for myself we were all better for it. And for me personally, I was a better player because of Mr. Stroehlein and he made me love baseball which I continued to play in the Babe Ruth league with coach Bobby Botka and in High School where I was a member of the 1979 Long Island Championship baseball team and I even played a little ball in college. You are going to be missed Mr. S and from me - thank you for taking the time to make me a better baseball player but more importantly than that you gave me the lifetime love and enjoyment for what I consider the greatest game in the world.
Below are 3 pictures and 2 of them are my favorite pictures of Mr. and Mrs. The baseball picture in the middle is how I’ll remember Mr. Stroehlein - as the great coach that he was. I don’t know when that picture was taken and I wasn’t even on that particular team but this picture is just one remnant of the many teams and kids that Mr. Stroehlein coached over his numerous years at the Floral Park playground.
God bless you Mr. Stroehlein and my deepest condolences to the family — Wife, Judy Stroehlein and sons Steve, Danny, Tim, Jeff and Jimmy. Your dad was truly one of the best and this is a very heartbreaking day for me and for many. :(
