Freda L. Turner's Obituary
Freda L. Turner, 92, born May 11, 1918 in Lowell Massachusetts passed away at Mease Dunedin Hospital on Thursday, March 31st 2011 at 10:30 a.m. with her niece Jean V. Whitehurst and close friend, Jo Butterworth by her side. Freda, the youngest of four children, grew up on a farm in Canterbury, New Hampshire. Her family roots were deep in New England, going back to the first governor of Massachusetts, William Bradford. Early on, she went to work for the telephone company as an operator. When World War II broke out, she joined the military serving in both the Navy and the Coast Guard, where she learned Morse code. She met Tom Turner while both were in the service and was married until his death in 1982. After the service they lived in the D.C. area, where she continued with the telephone company. They later retired to the west coast of Florida. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, Waves National Lifetime member, Military Officers Association, Retired Officers of America. Freda was a contributor to The Wildlife Federation and patron and sponsor of Ruth Eckerd Hall, The Florida Youth Ranch, the Crossing Guards, EMT's, Fire Department her contributions are in perpetuity in memory of her mother, Maybelle Rollins Bradford. She loved her family, friends, and music. She also played the piano and organ. She had nine nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews.
