Gay Roberts Duncan's Obituary
Gay Roberts Duncan, 91, a 68-year resident of Clearwater, died on April 6, 2025, at Suncoast Hospice Care Center of North Pinellas.
A true Florida native, Gay was born to into a pioneer Florida family to Kelly and Ouida Roberts on August 25, 1933, in Zolfo Springs, Fl and grew up on large ranch that raised both cattle and citrus. After graduating from Hardee County High School (where she was homecoming queen), she transferred to the University of Florida in Gainesville for a chance to “see the world”. It was there that she met Bobby Johnson Duncan, a brilliant Georgia farm boy, and agreed to marry him in 1951. Bob’s career in military electronics took them first to the big city of New York, where their two children were born, but finally back to Florida in 1957.
Bob and Gay thrived in Clearwater, becoming active in their Baptist church and in local civic and political organizations. She also fulfilled her dream of traveling throughout much of the US and Europe with family and friends. In the early 1970s, Bob and Gay opened Suncoast Sights and Sounds, a consumer electronics retail store, in Dunedin, which they ran successfully for many years. But Gay’s greatest passion was for her family and her church, both of which benefited enormously from her grace, charm, and great empathy.
She lost her beloved Bob in 2015 but carried on with her legendary energy and warmth for her family and church until her health began to fade. She leaves behind two children, Neva Duncan-Tabb and Craig Duncan (Barbara); a sister, Sue Overcash (Ron); five grandchildren, Amanda Duncan, Rebecca Duncan, Jared Duncan, Ian Tabb, and Sabra Tabb; and three great-grandchildren, Abrial Norwick, Jayden Barnaky and Jaxson Barnaky. To her family, she will always be our much-loved matriarch.
Per Gay’s wishes, her family will bury her cremated ashes next to her husband in a family plot in Wauchula, FL, on Monday, April 21. They will host a celebration of her life for friends and her church family on Saturday, April 26, at 11:00 am in the Fellowship Hall of North Dunedin Baptist Church in Dunedin, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to either North Dunedin Baptist Church, the Bay Area Pregnancy Center, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
