My family met George when my father Capt. David B. Murphy USMC transferred from Quantico, VA to Waterbury, CT as a recruiter in 1970. I think we both lived in the same apartment complex and that must have been how they met. My family moved away from Naugatuck in 1993.
My father and George had very much in common, with a deep understanding and appreciation for history, politics, and of course the Marine Corps. George would stop by our house from time to time, and they would talk for hours.
I also had the experience of having George as a substitute teacher at Naugatuck High School one time. It was one of the funniest moments of my high school years. It was study hall and we had a prankster that thought he was going to pull one over on George. I was the only one who knew the real George and remember saying to myself "This is going to be interesting".
So this went back and forth between the two of them for about 20 minutes, until George called his bluff and the kid ran as fast as he could out of the class room. The whole classroom was laughing non stop and I think we all learned a valuable lesson too, all in good fun.
My father told me many hilarious stories about George throughout my life and I am sure they were all true.
I always admired George and the world was a better place because of him.
My deepest sympathies to George and his family.
I will never forget him.
Respectfully,
Sean Murphy
I went to Sacred Heart High with George .
He was such a nice person. Rest in peace, George. God bless!

George was a neighbor of mine for 4 years. No matter how rough his day was going he never failed to ask me how I was feeling or if I needed anything. He would have given me the shirt off his back if I was in need. We didn’t see eye to eye on everything. I can just see a big ole grin on his face when he saw his mother. Say hi for me George. You will be missed my friend. Fly low and SEMPER FI my brother.
RIP George . I was a classmate of George and Larry at St. Francis Elementary School.
George also substituted at City Hill Middle School where I was an Administrator. The kids really liked him. Unusual for a substitute . Very nice c classmate and person !
I grew up with George and his brother Larry, two very fine people. We spent many hours in each others' homes and, of course, enjoying the freedom of the outdoors. We were all classmates at St. Francis School, class of 1963. George than went to Sacred Heart High School. We lost touch over the years after I moved away from town and became preoccupied with daily cares, but I have often thought of George and Larry, two of the happiest, most cheerful people I have ever known. You could see their smiles at a distance, and they always had a good word.
So sorry to hear about George. I grew up on School Street a few houses away. Played basketball with the twins in their driveway many times. They were both nice guys. My sympathy to the family. I am sure he will be missed.
