Harold Jett West's Obituary
Harold Jett West, 64, of Dunedin, passed away on May 3, 2023. Harold was born in Stockton, California, June 10,1958 and, growing up the son of a career military officer, lived in numerous states and countries in Central America. After earning a B.S. in Biology from Auburn University, he quickly secured a captain’s license and successfully owned and operated multiple commercial fishing boats throughout the Gulf of Mexico. Some 30 years ago, Harold founded and managed Wetland Management Services, providing ecological services across Florida and beyond — a perfect fit for the true student of nature that he was.
Family was central to Harold’s life, especially his wife of 37 years and daughter Cassie, as well as extended family and close friends who became like family. He gave generously of himself to all. As important as family was, get-togethers had to be scheduled around hunting and fishing seasons. He was happiest on opening day of dove season with his faithful Lab Lucy by his side and Cassie with her 410 in the field nearby; heading out full throttle with family and friends to his favorite permit wreck or grouper hole; or sitting in a blind before daylight with his turkey call primed to call a gobbler in closer.
Harold always demonstrated great competence with everything he touched, whether in his work or in hobbies like woodworking, gardening, and, of course, cooking. He was respected by friends and colleagues alike and felt a strong sense of service, exhibited by contributions to numerous organizations and efforts. Harold was a member of Dunedin’s Marina Advisory Committee and served as its chair for several years. He advocated for effective commercial fishery management as well as potential regulatory impacts on the people and livelihoods of its participants. Harold tagged and released over 200 Permit as part of Bonefish and Tarpon Trust’s Project Permit research.
His zest for life, candid and outspoken manner, and empathy for others will be sorely missed. His departure creates a void for a very broad and diverse group of employees, friends, and extended family. Harold is survived by his wife Teresa; daughter Cassie; brother Richard; and twin brother Dana, and numerous well-loved nieces and nephews. Harold joins in heaven his daughter Sara Frances; sister Bridget Groome; and his parents Hugh and Chan West. Harold’s family plans a private Celebration of Life.
