Hugo Stanley Ferguson's Obituary
Hugo S. Ferguson passed away peacefully on March 22, 2025, at the age of 95 surrounded by loved ones in Clearwater, Florida.
He is survived by his wife Evelyn Ferguson, four sons, 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Hugo left a lasting impression on all those who knew him, and was cherished for his passion, love, and guidance.
Hugo grew up on a farm in northern Vermont with his sister and 2 brothers. Upon graduating high school, he enlisted in the Navy and served 4 years. He served as a Navy Electronics Technician, working on radar systems & secure communications and also played trombone in a Navy marching band. After the Navy he attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), earning a degree in physics and his PhD in Metallurgy.
Embodying the entrepreneurial spirit, Hugo co-founded Dynamic Systems Inc. (DSI) in Troy, NY, while a graduate student at RPI & served as President and later as Chairman, until retiring in 2000. While at DSI he traveled the world making scientific and business presentations at Universities, Research Institutes, Conferences and Fortune 500 companies. His pioneering work included developing new research tools and new processes for welding, steel and aluminum production. He was inducted as a Fellow of The American Welding Society and has over 50 patents. His innovative ideas resulted in patents in metallurgy, instrumentation, aeronautics, air cushion vehicles, reel mowers, servo controls, hydraulics and data acquisition systems. He supported materials research programs at several universities including Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. While living in upstate New York Hugo was also active in the community, supporting the local fire department, his church as a trustee and treasurer, serving the local school board, and contributing his expertise to the Crystal Lake Association where he lived.
After retirement to Florida, he enjoyed boating and visits from his grandchildren, while continuing to work on a variety of scientific research projects. He is also remembered as a talented musician who loved playing the piano and listening to big band music. Hugo’s work ethic and desire for knowledge was infectious to all of those around him. His adventurous spirit, determination, passion for problem solving and love for his extended family will be missed.
