James Lewis Carter's Obituary
James Lewis “Lew” Carter (81) Largo, FL passed away February 10th surrounded by his loving family. Lew is survived by his wife of 50 years- Eileen ‘Kay’ Carter, sons- James L. Carter Jr. and his wife Dorothy, Richard S. Carter and wife Lynda, daughters Nancy Thomas, husband Tom, Kathleen Welsh Doss and her husband Jerry, also by his brother Paul Carter of Winston Salem, wife Cathy, cousin Charles McClaren and his wife Debbie.
Lew has 8 grandchildren including Candace and Brooke Carter, Rachael Czekaj and her husband Luke, Joel Doss and wife Christine, and Leath Doss, Paul and Kayla Welsh, as well as Whitney Schrader.
Lew has 5 great-grandchildren; Paige and Riley, Eli and Audrey and McKinley and special cousin Charles McClaren
Born to entrepreneurial parents Floyd and Nancy (née Jones) Carter of Winston-Salem, North Carolina where he worked in the family businesses. Lew attended the University of North Carolina and ultimately moved to the Clearwater Florida area where he founded the office equipment business Xerographics. There he achieved success and developed many close relationships among employees and customers alike many of which he kept close throughout his life He was supportive of many local charities and was always there for his friends and those in need. Lew retired in 2005 after selling his business to DEX Imaging.
Being an avid and accomplished golfer allowed Lew to enjoy lifelong friendships among fellow players. There he met or spent his time with his closest friends. Many of those began at Feather Sound CC. or through his time playing renowned golf courses throughout the country.
Lew and his wife Kay traveled often and especially enjoyed the RV lifestyle visiting the entire country, including the great northwest, California, Canada, and scores of destinations in between.
They built a log home in Lew’s family property outside Winston Salem where the family has made a tradition of calling it home for Thanksgivings, and spring holiday seasons.
Spending a lifetime of adventure, professional and recreational competition, Lew was full of life and lived his life with honor, integrity, devotion, and zest. There are few like him and he will be missed and remembered forever among those who knew him.
