James Gordon " Gordie" Fowlie's Obituary
James Gordon Fowlie passed away on February 12, 2020 at the age of 88. He had recently celebrated his birthday on January 31 with parties at the Original Frenchy’s and The Beachcomber on Clearwater Beach.
“Gordie” was filled with love for his family, as well as for those whose paths he crossed.
He was born in Philadelphia to parents James Fowlie and Helen Green Fowlie. He is predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Ian Fowlie and William. He is survived by his brother, Ronald Fowlie, his loving wife Jean Violet Legg Fowlie, two devoted sons Paul Scott and David five grand-children – Kristen, Alanna, Erik, Cassandra, and Noel, and two great-grand-children – Bradley and Julian.
Gordon was a Veteran of the US Navy, a proud Patriot, and a multi-term
Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Kearny, NJ.
As a Little League Baseball Coach – Kearny Shop Rite was his team. His goal was not to win,
but to have fun playing and learning the great American past-time. He always treated his team for ice cream after the games, whether they were victorious or not.
A Cub Scout pack leader, a volunteer Sunday School teacher, a Shriner, a past master of the North Arlington NJ Masonic Lodge – a volunteer of the traveling Funeral Team, a Facilitator of the local Special Olympics through the Optimist Club; these are just a few of the activities with which he served his community and made the world a better place.
Relocating to Clearwater, Florida as an avid SnowBird, he continued his contributions and service at Top of the World, as President of the New York/New Jersey Club; he was the coordinator for the Luau and trips to the racetrack. He was also a volunteer at Morton Plant Hospital in the Rehab Center.
With his enthusiasm for people, and his service to the community, he put smiles on millions of faces. But those smiles were also his profession: as a dental technician, he created false teeth for people in need, to allow them to smile again for the remainder of their lives.
He was the CEO of Legg Dental Lab, established in 1940 by Grandpa Rex; the Lab remains in business today, 80 years later.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Gordon’s name to the Shriners Children Hospital, or the charity of your choice.
A visitation will be held on Saturday 2/15/2020 at 1 pm with a service to follow at 2 pm at
Moss Feaster, 693 S. Belcher Rd. Clearwater, FL 33764.
