James A. Purcell's Obituary
James A. Purcell passed away peacefully, at home, on May 22, 2024. He has rejoined his wife, Judy, who predeceased him in 2007. Jim was renowned for his steadfast dedication, love, and devotion to his family. He was a businessman, golfer, and traveler who was active in the community. Jim’s warm presence and the legacy he leaves behind will be cherished by everyone who knew him.
Jim was born in Cleveland Ohio, on August 22, 1936. He was a graduate of Roosevelt High School and Kent State University, in Kent, Ohio. He owned and operated Purcell’s for Men clothing stores in Kent, Ohio, Hudson, Ohio, and Stuart, Florida. He was a prominent figure in the business community for decades. First, he established Purcell’s for Men as a destination for quality menswear and exceptional service. Later, he became a founding partner of Treasure Coast Federal Savings Bank in Martin County, Florida. Jim was actively engaged in the community, serving on charitable boards and participating as a parishioner at both St. Joseph and St. Martin Catholic Church. His passion for his work and service was matched only by his love for his family.
Jim shared 42 wonderful years of marriage with his devoted wife, Judy, who was not only his steadfast life partner but also his trusted colleague in business. Together, they built a loving home filled with family, laughter, warmth, and cherished memories. They found joy in traveling the world, making new friends, exploring new destinations, often opting for adventures in their RV. After retiring, Jim and Judy relocated from Stuart, Florida, to a community called The Great Outdoors in Titusville, Florida. There they enjoyed golfing, RV’ing and the friendships they made. Jim and Judy’s wanderlust led them to discovering Lineville, Land Harbor, North Carolina in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and they traded in their motorhome for a summer home. Following Judy’s passing, Jim returned to Stuart, Florida for 10 years before ultimately relocating to the Clearwater area.
Jim is survived by his loving children: Scott, Christine, and Julie; their spouses: Jamy, John, and Lisa; and his adoring grandchildren: Olga, Andrew, Jude, Rachel, and Ashley. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
An internment will be held at Fernhill Memorial Gardens on 6/13/2024 at 10:00 AM in Stuart, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, Jim’s wish was that donations be made to Suncoast Hospice at https://suncoasthospicefoundation.org/donations2/ or make checks payable to: Suncoast Hospice Foundation 5771 Roosevelt Blvd. Clearwater, FL 33760.
Jim’s kindness, generosity, and indomitable spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will not be forgotten.
