James Alexander Wiseman's Obituary
James Alexander Wiseman, known as "Jim" or "Jimmy" to his friends and family, died from heart failure on July 26, 2024, in Clearwater, Florida. He is survived by his wife, Lynn; his children, Jane Rachel and James Douglas; his grandson, James Link; his father, James Richard; and his brother, Stephen Michael.
Born August 6th, 1956, in Columbia, Missouri, Jim was an insatiable reader and consummate student. After skipping two grades, he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor's degree in History and Mathematics. At the age of 25, he earned a PhD in Mathematics from Boston University. During the first decade of his career, Jim was a college professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he was also deeply involved in local politics. Later, he transitioned into the business world becoming an actuary, a professional mathematician. He quickly ascended to the position of Chief Actuary, earning the distinctions of Associate, Member, and Fellow of the American Academy of Actuaries.
A lover of the classics, he particularly favored Shakespeare, Tolkien and The Beatles. A lifetime chess player, Jim achieved Master rank and a peak rating of 2200. Jim adored his wife and was unendingly encouraging of his children. He was the type to never miss a soccer game or stage performance and the loss of his passion and enthusiasm for his family is deeply felt.
Jim will be remembered for his qualities of kindness, generosity, and boundless curiosity. He relished an intellectual discussion, gave everyone the benefit of the doubt and the only thing he truly despised was injustice. He will be sorely missed, and his family hopes to emulate all of the best qualities that he never failed to see in us.
