I was one of Jan's English students when Thornwood H.S. was brand spanking new. Jan was a new teacher; judging by her birthdate, she was about 11 years older than I! My husband and I were talking about our favorite teachers, and of course I told him about Jan. She was kind, empathetic, had heart, and was enthusiastic about her calling. I was a book nerd. (Still am!) Jan gave me books to read and report on for extra credit. She also guided me through some of the common teenage angst. I came back to visit after graduation and was treated as the adult I thought I was! I was encouraged to call her by her first name- even babysat Chris a few times when he was an infant. I actually tried to nominate her for a Red Apple Teacher's award, after graduating, but didn't know where to begin. I knew Jan was probably long retired as a teacher, but wanted to see if she was still in the area. Then I found she had only just passed. Condolences to the family. I wish you all the hopeful comfort of knowing Jan Ryder was a wonderful teacher, a friend, and truly made a difference to this (former) English student!
