Jewell "Babe" Speir Young's Obituary
Young, Jewell Speir “Babe”, 91, passed away peacefully in her beloved home on March 6, 2018. She was born and raised in Dunedin and was a cheerleader at Clearwater High. After a year of nursing school in Georgia, she married and raised three children in Nashville, Tennessee. During her years in Nashville, she was a member of Second Presbyterian Church and the Charlotte Pearl Tennis group and was an active volunteer. In 1979, Babe moved back to Dunedin to live in her beautiful and charming Victorian home overlooking St. Joseph’s Sound. She was a popular, welcoming lady as she sat on her large porch where a good time was had by all. Even in her older age, she made many new friends as neighbors and walkers would stop in to sit a few minutes with her and enjoy the breathtaking view. She was a lifelong tennis player and enjoyed golf for a number of years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin, the Dunedin Historical Society and was a charter member of AWRT (American Women in Radio and Television). She volunteered with Meals on Wheels and the Dunedin History Museum. She was often seen around town driving her "pink jeep". She is survived by her sister, Catherine Speir Carnes, Stone Mountain, GA, two sons, John Calvin Young (Barbra), Nashville,TN, Charles Patterson Young (Deborah), North Augusta, SC, one daughter, Barbara Young Behar, Nashville, three grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. It was a blessing that Babe was able to continue to live in her home with the loving care of Sue Legg and her dear friends, Maryanne, Terri, Jan and Tom.
A Celebration of Life will be March 24, 2018 at 11:00 am at her home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Suncoast Hospice (www.SuncoastHospiceFoundation.org) or First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin (www.fpcdunedin.org).
