Joann H. Thein
On May 2, 2024, Joann Hovanec Thein entered into eternal life at age 85. She was lovingly surrounded by her son, Randy Thein (Cathee), and daughter, Kimberly Ann Lochner (David). She is survived by four grandchildren: Michael Crognale (Jen), Michael Thein (Lauren), Julie Schanzenbach (Brian), and Lisa Thein as well as two great grandsons: Weston and Cameron Crognale. Joann is pre-deceased by her husband, William C. Thein, her parents Joseph Hovanec and Sally Hovanec (nee Phillips) and her brother Gerald D. Hovanec.
Born and raised in Ambridge, PA, Joann met and married Bill Thein and they raised their family in the Pittsburgh area before moving to Clearwater Beach, FL in 1990. She and Bill celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in November 2023.
Joann graduated from St. Veronica’s High School near the top of her class. She worked at her children’s elementary school before taking a position at General Paper Company in Pittsburgh. After moving to Florida she worked at Suncoast Hospital.
Joann and Bill enjoyed Saturday night dancing with friends for many years in both Pittsburgh and Clearwater Beach. Joann was very involved with the decorating committee of her condo association and enjoyed playing poker with the condo ladies. She was an avid walker and an excellent cook. “Grandma’s cookies” were a favorite among family and were often requested by the friends and co-workers of the family.
A funeral Mass will be held Monday, May 6, 2024, 11:00 am at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 750 San Salvador Dr, Dunedin, FL 34698. Visitation will be just prior to Mass, 9:30 am – 10:30 am at Moss Feaster Funeral Home, 1320 Main St, Dunedin, FL 34698. Internment at Bushnell National Cemetery will be private.
Joann was a supporter of many charities. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice or toward a Mass card.
