Joyce A. Heckman's Obituary
Joyce Alice Heckman, 83, died at Mease Countryside Hospital in Safety Harbor, Florida, after a long illness. Joyce worked for 32 years as a Human Resources/Personnel/Employee Benefits manager in New Jersey. She was born in Staten Island, NY and grew up in Bronxville, NY. She was the daughter of Margaret and Christopher Heckman. After graduating with an associate degree from Green Mountain College she went on to earn her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Fairleigh Dickenson University in New Jersey.
Upon her retirement, Joyce moved to Fort Myers Beach, Florida where she enjoyed volunteering at the Mound House and being the secretary of The Friends of the Mound House for many years. She also participated in several fundraising events for the Mound House, including the Love-Lites fundraiser and the Vintage Fashion Show. Joyce joined the Fort Myers Beach Theater group and performed in a number of productions. She was a member of the Ascension Catholic Church where she often served as a reader.
When Joyce’s health deteriorated, she moved to Brookdale Assisted Living facility in Fort Myers and recently relocated to the Landmark Assisted Living facility in Clearwater to be closer to family.
Joyce is survived by her sister, Virginia Anderson, of Pittsford, VT and many cousins, nieces, and nephews of several generations. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Donald Heckman, sister-in-law, Kate Heckman; sister, Marjorie Pinto, brother-in-law, John (Jack) Pinto; brother-in-law, Paul Anderson, and nephew, Christopher Pinto.
The family plans to hold a service in the Fort Myers Beach area soon. Details are pending and will be communicated to friends and family once finalized.
