Larry K. Simoneau's Obituary
Lawrence Kenneth Simoneau, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, Christian, Coach and sports fan, died on August 26, 2023. He was 87 years and 2 days old.
Larry was devoted to his surviving wife of 48 years Susan Potts Simoneau of Belleair, Florida. He is survived by his son Jean Pierre Simoneau (JoAnna) of Fairbanks, Alaska, and two daughters Kathrine Cybelle Simoneau of Boulder, Colorado, and Jennifer Potts Simoneau Vaden (Hill) of Houston, Texas. He leaves five grandchildren Erin Simoneau, Austin Simoneau, and Henry Simoneau, as well as Walker Vaden and Lilah Vaden and his beloved cat Simba. Larry was preceded in death by his parents Jean Baptiste and Helen Simoneau, sisters Doris Humiston and Anita Edmands, and brothers Norman Simoneau and Jean Simoneau.
Larry was born in Laconia, New Hampshire, on August 24, 1936, and grew up as the cherished baby brother to his four siblings who taught him to ski, dance, and drive. They instilled in him his life-long love of all sports. Larry became a recognized waterski champion as a youth and competed on New Hampshire’s Lake Winnisquam and Florida’s Cypress Gardens. He was a member of the Varsity ski team at the University of Colorado Boulder (Class of 1962) and helped the team clinch the 1960 NCAA National Ski Championship with his jumping events. When he and Susie relocated to Florida from New England, in 1984, Larry traded his ski poles for golf clubs and enjoyed spending time on the fairways with Susie and friends.
Larry's love of sports encouraged him to pursue a career in sports-related garment sales that allowed him to travel the country and make friends from New England to San Francisco and from Green Bay, Wisconsin to the Gulf Coast of Florida. Always outgoing, Larry never met a stranger and maintained close contact with all those he met throughout his life.
Larry spent over forty years working in Sales and Marketing. In his late 60s he went on to start a second career with the Pinellas County Sherriff’s Department. He retired as a Criminal Justice Specialist in 2011 and spent several years of his second retirement working as a Marshall at the Belleair Country Club and East Bay golf course – again finding a way to stay close to a sport he loved.
Larry was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Clearwater, Florida, where he served as a member of the Men’s Thursday Bible Study Group, the Church Vestry, a Volunteer at the Shed, and a Volunteer Organizer for FAST (Faith & Action for Strength Together). Larry also served as a Volunteer at Morton Plant Hospital.
In addition to family, friends, and sports, Larry loved telling stories, connecting people, sailing, Golden Retrievers, fancy cars, spiffy outfits, Frank Sinatra, dancing and all flavors of ice cream.
A Memorial Service and reception to celebrate Larry’s life will be held on Saturday, September 30th, 2023, at 11:00AM at The Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 701 Orange Avenue, Clearwater.
