"My loving memory of Grandmother from Anthony"
This is a very small story and may not hold much significance to others, but I will share it nonetheless.
Many years ago on one of our Florida trips to visit Grandma and Grandpa, our family would stay for weeks. Being the growing teenager that I was, I grew bored quickly and remember having a sour attitude for a good portion of our vacation.
One day Grandma and mother asked me to take care of the dishes, and I was, admittedly, very reluctant to do the job. I don’t fully remember exactly what she said, but Grandma made a comment in Vietnamese about my insubordination.
I didn’t think anything at the time, but as the years passed, I have had the opportunity to hear stories of the family’s past; fleeing from Vietnam, struggling together to make a living, and producing the success they have now. It was then, I understood the weight behind Grandma’s words.
The lifestyle that was lived by everyone is very different from what the children have nowadays, and we never have had to struggle as much as the older generation has had to. And tried and true, struggle begets growth. That is what I have always admired of the older generation.
As small a comment that Grandma made to me back then, it was one of the many starters of my personal growth and I still remember it to this day. I am spoiled beyond belief for living a life my mother, her sisters and brothers, and my grandparents never had; on top of that, Grandma, alongside my Aunts and Uncles, would always support me with generous gifts year after year, despite not having much to give. I will never forget that.
Thank you everyone for your kindness. Thank you Grandma for raising such fine children. They will miss you, cry for you, at times ask you for advice from wherever you are, but they will be just fine. They are all strong individuals, just as you were.
Thank you for being my grandmother.
Love, Anthony
