Lula Hondras' Obituary
Stavroula (Lula) Hondras of Clearwater, Florida, passed away peacefully at her home with her daughter, Christine, and her son-in-law, Bill, by her side on July 25th at 5:15 PM. She was 98 years old. Presvytera Lu was the beloved wife of the late Rev. John Hondras who passed away in 1988.
Presvytera Lu was born on May 16, 1922 in Altoona, Pennsylvania. She and Father John were married in 1942 in Altoona. A year later they moved to Savannah, Georgia where Presvytera Lu served the church by becoming involved with the Sunday School and the Philoptochos. In 1953, Father and Presvytera moved to Chicago where they became instrumental in building St. Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Church, where she was again actively involved in leading the Sunday School and a member of the Philoptochos. She was also a member of the Sisterhood of Presvytera. In 1972, Father and Presvytera moved to Jacksonville, Florida and then to their final destination of Clearwater, Florida. Here both Father and Presvytera played an important role in their grandchildren’s upbringing.
After Father John’s passing, Presvytera remained faithful to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox church in Clearwater. She also volunteered with the Hospice organization in Clearwater. She loved to sew, making most of her own clothing and loved to draw, which not many knew about her. Presvytera Lu was always known to have a smile on her face. She was quick witted and loved to laugh. She had an infectious personality that always left you feeling happy after spending time with her. Her kindness, laughter and nurturing spirit will be remembered by all who knew her.
Presvytera is survived by her three children, Anthe Montgomery, Christine Georgallis and her husband Bill Gilbert, and her son Nick Hondras and his wife Pat Hondras, as well as her grandchildren, Chris Montgomery and his wife Megan, Stavroula Georgallis and her husband Mark Nowikowski and Elias Georgallis. Her grandson Michael Montogmery is deceased. She also has four great-grandchildren, Tatum, Braxton, Alexi, and Zoe and is survived by her sister, Sia Callas. Presvytera Lu cherished her many family members and friends. She will be deeply missed by those that were lucky enough to have known her and shared in her life.
