Patricia W Carawan's Obituary
Patricia Frances Williams Carawan, daughter of the late Frances Elizabeth Lewis Williams and Edward Williams, was born on February 2, 1935 in Newport, Wales, United Kingdom. She grew up in the nearby village of Maesycwmmer.
Pat was raised in the Church of England, faithfully attending services with her family. Although she was an only child, both of her parents came from large families, and she enjoyed riding horses and spending her childhood in the company of many friends and extended family members.
After completing secondary school, Pat attended college and began working for the government in London. Soon after, as fate would have it, she met Grover Lee Carawan, an American serviceman stationed in Karlsruhe, Germany. The two began a long-distance relationship before Pat moved overseas to build a life with Grover. They were married in 1957 in Greenville, North Carolina.
Pat, Grover, and their daughter, Jane, traveled extensively throughout the United States, Central America, and Europe in conjunction with Grover’s employment with the United States government. They especially enjoyed their 5 years spent in Panama and Germany.
Pat loved to travel, explore new cultures, cuisines, and meet new people. She was a gracious and entertaining hostess with an unforgettable laugh. Pat was also a dedicated homemaker with a superb sense of style, often designing and sewing stylish wardrobes for family and friends. She spent many years volunteering in schools, civic organizations, and community projects throughout her life. She was particularly celebrated for her work with American Red Cross.
After Grover’s retirement, the two settled in Tarpon Springs, Florida, to be closer to their daughter and granddaughter. They continued to travel and interact with various organizations until health issues inevitably restricted their abilities.
Pat passed peacefully on Sunday, December 22, 2024, while under hospice care with her daughter at her side. She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Grover Lee Carawan; her daughter, Jane Carawan Anderson; her granddaughter, Valerie Michelle Rotunno; and her great-grandsons John Alexander Rotunno IV, and Chase Raymond Rotunno, who all brought immense joy to her life.
Pat was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her warmth, elegance, and nurturing disposition will forever be remembered and treasured by all who knew her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion and resilience, and she will be forever missed by her family and friends.
