Paul Leroy Mellican's Obituary
Paul Leroy Mellican was born on September 19, 1940, in Galesburg, IL, to Roy and Fern Mellican. He died August 10, 2024, at Suncoast Hospice, Pinellas Park, FL He attended Knox College and graduated from Bradley University with a MS in computer science. With one of the earliest computer science degrees, he made good use of his skills designing computer systems for various midwestern manufacturing companies. He proudly served his country as a member of the Illinois National Guard. He is survived by his wife Nancy, two daughters, five grandchildren, and the much-anticipated arrival in a few weeks of his first great-grandchild.
Paul was a golfer in the truest sense of the word. On the course and in life, he strived for birdies, was happy with par, and knew that a cold beer with a good friend could heal all wounds. He never bragged, even after a particularly exceptional round of golf. Instead, he spoke of the achievements of his wife, children and grandchildren, never running out of fond words to say in reference to them. As a husband, his focus was not on frivolous gestures, but rather on demonstrating love through his actions and unrelenting support. As a father, he raised his daughters with compassion and strong encouragement. For his grandchildren, he was happy to sit and listen as they raved about the latest events in their lives, and he was quick to join them in whatever games they wanted to play, whether it was the millionth round of “Hide the Thimble” or a game of make-believe with the toys carefully preserved from his daughters’ childhood. He found his joy through ensuring joy was felt by those around him. His presence was subtle and gentle, but his words merited great attention for his effortless goofy humor, surprising stories about his adventures in life, and the purity of his kindness.
Paul has been cremated and a private family remembrance service will be held at a later date. Donations can be made in his memory to Friends of Brooker Creek Preserve, 3940 Keystone Road, Tarpon Springs, Florida.
