I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Rainer for 20 years. I first met him at Honeywell. Working with Rainer was always an honor and a privilege. He was a great mentor to many of us Honeyweller’s. He could be counted on and was the go-to guy willing to help solve any problem; technical or otherwise. After he retired from Honeywell, we all missed his technical expertise, his professionalism, and most of all, his friendly warm personality. We soon realized his shoes were much too large to fill; going to work was never the same.
My friendship with Rainer did not stop with work. Outside of Honeywell, we also became good friends. My wife, Sherry, and I shared many good times and special occasions with Rainer and Joni and perhaps had a few too many margaritas together. But that’s what you do when you tailgate a Jimmy Buffet concert.
I remember a time the four of us went to watch a launch at the cape. Despite the cold temperature (it was in the 30s that morning), we had a great time waiting for the 5 am scrub. Even though we didn’t see the launch we laughed a lot about that trip. We sure could have used Rainer and Joni’s RV then.
One other memory that comes to mind was Several Easters ago my wife and I were busy moving into our new home and had to work through the Easter weekend to prepare the house for move in. We roughed it and thought our Easter dinner would be fast food. When Rainer and Joni found out, they decided to surprise us with a full Easter dinner. They packed up the entire dinner and brought it to us at the empty house we were painting. We ate on a make-shift table and enjoyed the best meal. That turned out to be one of the most special and memorable Easters ever. They were there when we needed some true friends. Thank you Joni and Rainer. I’m sure many of you have similar stories about spending time with Rainer and Joni.
Rainer was a true friend. I will cherish our memories together forever.
After seeing and hearing from his family and friends, it's plain to see that he will live on through all of us. The best way we can celebrate his life is by remembering him, his great qualities, and perhaps by trying to live life to the fullest as he did. Rest-in-peace Rainer - We all love you so much.
