I just realized that February of this year would have marked Richard's 45th Anniversary as a member of Clearwater Civitan Club.
He had been more active since retiring, but he was always the club CPA, doing our required tax forms. Currently he is "President", a role he has had in the past and one he accepted - to be the club contact person and "leader".
Since Covid, and since most of our members are Richard's age and older, we have not been doing as much in person. We kept in touch via phone and email. We are a very small club, only 9 members, but Richard knows many in the Florida District as well. He has been to many District meetings. He also has attended several Civitan International Conventions. Civitans I have contacted send their condolences to the family - he was known and liked and a valuable member of Civitan.
Our club is a non profit service club but we do not have the official IRS charity designation. Civitan International does have a Foundation. The major philanthropy is the Civitan International Research Center at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. (UAB) CIRC focuses on developmental disabilities from mental retardation to autism to Alzheimers and even brain cancer. Individual clubs and members support CIRC through mint candy boxes and other fundraisers.
The address is: CIRC, c/o Civitan International, One Civitan Place, Birmingham, AL 35213-0744
Locally, our club has supported the Homeless Empowerment Program, 1120 N. Betty Lane, Clearwater, FL 33755. HEP provides support and housing for individuals, families, veterans. For many years, our club held yard sales to benefit HEP. Once, using our yard sale experience, we helped with an estate sale for one of Richard's clients.
Several years ago, recognizing the needs of veterans, HEP built a new facility with apartments just for veterans. There is an on site computer center, shared recreation space, accessible living. HEP helps veterans with transportation to medical facilities, helps them with benefits, and employment opportunities. Their philosophy is a "hand up", helping clients return to independence, rather than just a hand out. It is a 4-5 star charity.
For several years, in November, there has been an annual golf tournament to benefit the veterans' programs. Our Civitan Club mans the putting contest at this event - a pretty easy gig for us. Our job is to check off the golfers as they make their rounds, and then record the "closest to the hole". Once someone makes a hole in one, the job is even easier since we do not even have to measure. Mostly it is a nice day to be outside in Florida, sitting under a tent, and socializing with each other and the golfers. Richard was often one of our club volunteers. I think he liked the idea of helping veterans too.
Thank you Richard for your commitment and leadership on behalf of Civitan – you will be missed!
