In my high school and college years, I spent summers working for Bob at HBA Service Company. At first, I don't know that I was good for much more than running parts from job site to job site, but Bob didn't mind. He came up with jobs for me that played to my strengths - wiring, chiller hardware programming - and over time my skills improved. Bob always insisted that I understand not just the mechanics of HVAC, but the principles as well. To this day, I can recall his lectures on thermodynamics and heat transfer. While it took me many years to reflect on Bob's words and develop a strong interest in mechanics, I think he would be proud to learn that I've since used these skills to take apart, repair and rebuild just about every system and appliance in my home.
More than anything, though, I think Bob kept me around to share his passion for reading. Bob and I were both voracious readers, and hardly a week went by without Bob bringing a stack of paperbacks to the office. He would lend these to me, and then ask for my thoughts once I finished reading them. True to form, when I last met with Bob for lunch in Denver several years ago, he had with him a cardboard box full of books to share.
If you read through the other comments on this tribute page, you'll find that my mother and brother also worked for Bob for lengthy periods of time - 30+ years and 10 years, respectively. It goes without saying that Bob was a true friend to my family, and he will be greatly missed.

Bob was my employer/boss and friend for 30+ years. He had looked forward to his retirement in Florida, warm weather and fishing. He was enjoying his home on the water and had even become interested in bird watching from his deck. Mid-April Jack and I were fortunate enough to meet him for breakfast and have a short visit during a our stay in Tampa. We will miss Bob--May he rest in peace.

I worked for bob also for 10 years.i was a car mechanic that was looking for a different career choice.i went to the interview and said "i know nothing about heaters or air conditioners but im pretty good with a wrench". Bob says" thats what im looking for can you start thursday?" He wanted to teach me his way.and over 10 years he taught me everything i needed to know and use that knowledge everyday.i now have my own hvac bussiness.i called him about 3 months ago.because i needed his advise.last thing he said was "take care of yourself kid"R.I.P. sir you will be missed. Condolences to the family. Sincerly, ed kohler.
I worked for Bob for 10 years, but knew him many more. He was just as much of a friend as he was a boss and I always enjoyed his company. Bob was the most humble man I've known. He started and owned a small successful Commercial Heating and AC company that he never wished to grow very big because he enjoyed the close relationships he had with his long time customers. Bob dwelled in a small apartment and drove the same base model Ford truck for 20 years,he never rally cared for anything that was high end, despite his success.
Bob loved his work and could often be found in his office looking at jobs on the weekend. Bob was intelligent and creative when it came to his work, he was especially gifted when it came to moving large Boilers and Chillers in and out of tight spaces in the high-rise buildings he often worked in.
I will truly miss Bob Ayers, he will always be in my thoughts and memories.
Bob and I bought a building together almost twenty years ago which we shared with our respective companies. Bob was not only the greatest partner I could have ever had, he was also the most honorable person I have ever known. I will always prize not only the shoulder he gave me but the laughs we shared. The lord took one of the truly good ones a little too soon! God bless you Bob!
