Rob was honestly the greatest friend I had ever had. I have been thinking of him often lately for some reasons, wishing I could see him again to seek his advice on life, unknowing that he passed until I heard today. Till this day, I have yet to meet a kinder, wiser, more selfless man. He deserved the world. This world needed him longer. We lost touch after I moved across the country and somethings came between us. I feel guilt for that. I miss our talks and his hugs. He cared for me like no one else. I’d give anything for him to still be here. Anyone who knew him, knew his heart. I was so lucky to have had him in my life for the time I did. I hope I can talk to him again someday and I hope I can raise my son to be a fraction of the man he was.

RIP. My coach Rob Nelson
I first trained Rob to help him overcome a few injuries. But what I didn’t see coming is that he would change my life. After almost 15 years of NOT playing hockey- he inspired me to get back to what I loved most. He stood by me through a shoulder dislocation. Encouraged me. Preparing mentally to get back at it. He met me on the ice -day one- 2 x a week he coached me for nearly three months. Just us. He even coached me on hour long phone conversations telling me to get out of my head, bringing to light how far I’ve come. He spent time with me- not expecting anything in return. I did what I could to show how much I valued him- kind words of appreciation- massage therapist appointments... offered to even feed him! He wasn’t a fan of any of it. ..He said “ why are you pumping my tires.” Last time we practiced together was about 10 days ago. He seemed fine. We had fun on the ice. Passing me 1 timers. I was “on it”. Telling me I was “ready”. Ready to play pickup against the guys I was so afraid of. Guys like him. Then he stopped responding to my texts. It wasn’t like him. I was worried- I felt something wasn’t right. I found out today. My first day on the ice without him... Asking everyone if they have heard from him - He was no longer here. I broke. Right there in the locker room. As he would say “just like a girl”. I wish I could have spent more time with him. Asked him more. Met lily. I wish I could have saved him. Without him I wouldn’t have conquered my biggest fear. So now I have to do it without him. In his honor. I can hear him in my ear- get your ass down- keep your head up- stop being a girl-are you tired? (Always say no lol) Then let’s keep going. I love you Rob. You sincerely changed my life. I’ll never be the same. .. because of you. Wish I could skate just once more with you. My heart is broken. Until we skate again. ..
My heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of Rob. I want everyone to know what a wonderful person he was. He took a special interest in being the hockey coach for my daughter, Kristen. He was an outstanding personality, very dedicated hockey coach and we are devastated at his untimely passing. I will remember his words of wisdom given in hockey sessions. My daughter is motivated more than ever to keep his light alive and will soon be getting back on the ice. The sadness is overwhelming and prayers to his family, hockey family and friends. You are in our hearts forever, Rob.
