Roger attended East High School, Rockford, Illinois and then enlisted in the US Navy during WWII. He was a baker on a minesweeper on the US Embattle. After the war ended he attended trade school at night, began an apprenticeship, and became a pattern maker. He was employed by Roper Stove, Rupp’s Pattern Shop, and Guilford Pattern Works in Loves Park, Illinois until he retired.
Roger loved wood making and carpentry work. He made a wide repertoire of furniture including China cabinets, bookcases, jeweler’s benches, checker boards, sheds, a teak grid for a bow spirt grate on a boat, a horn of plenty, and banana holders. He made rocking horses, doll beds, and barns for the grandchildren. He volunteered and built a library, wooden cross for Easter lilies, and wooden scrolls for Christmas at church. He built a tri-level home in which he and his family lived. He did roofing, plumbing, raised the roof on his apartment flat and added a third floor apartment, upgraded and wired electrical in homes, a farm, and loved doing a wide assortment of odd jobs, home additions, and remodeling for family and friends.
Roger founded a group of churches to play on teams and formed leagues for elementary, junior, and senior youth groups. Many nights he would spend calling and organizing the teams among the Lutheran Churches in the Rockford area. He coached baseball and basketball teams for many years. His basketball team only lost one game during the years he coached them. He also coached a girls youth softball team. He was very active in scouts and frequently would go on camping and fishing trips.
He also taught 2nd grade Sunday School for seven years at Zion Lutheran where he was baptized and regularly attended. He loved children and was a mentor for the youth at the church.
Roger had many childhood friends that remained friends throughout his life. He loved that he gave them nicknames and the stories behind them. They were truly lifelong friends. Many of them formed a golf group that would play weekly. He formed bowling leagues and bowled on men leagues and Mr. & Mrs. Leagues. He loved to go out on Fridays and Saturdays with neighbors or friends for couples night and went out for dinner and dancing. He loved to entertain and would have the golf gang over, the choir, neighbors or a variety of friends for cookouts, cards, or get togethers.
Roger had a heart of gold and was available on a moment’s notice. He loved his family and would light up whenever he was around the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.
