While contemplating the beautiful life of Rosemarie Chanin, I’ve been staring for some time at her astounding rendition of the men of SODC, circa 1995 I’m guessing. It is uncanny how she captured not only their faces but their clothes, postures, personalities! There they are: Joe, Tom, Daniel, Eric, Booch, me in my wearisome blue suit. She pulled more of our souls into that painting than any photograph could have.
I’m sure most people, even those who claimed to know Rusty well, were only slightly aware of her giftedness. I include myself in that lot. But even in my cluelessness I’m happily brimming with memories about her.
The memory of Rusty’s first visit to SODC is as clear as this morning’s sunshine! She sat as close to the exit as possible, determinedly disapproving, arms crossed with a slight scowl. As the service progressed her arms loosened, the scowl evolved into understated interest. After the service I met with her privately for a few minutes to probe her impressions. With classic Rusty straightforwardness she said, “The Jesus thing you can keep, but I really felt comfortable here.” It wasn’t many weeks later when, at the end of a Shabbat service, she commandeered the mic and announced, “I just want everybody to know I’m a believer!” As long as I live I’ll remember the reflex response of the congregation, lining up to grab a teary hug and welcome this daughter of Zion to the messianic mishpachah.
I am only one of scores who will treasure many precious memories of beloved Rusty.
But it is impossible to remember Rusty independent of Bob, her constant companion and adoring husband. Bob, I must tell you how, on so many occasions, I was moved by your tender care for your wife. Rusty’s temperament occasionally lived up to her hair color 😉 and over the years I observed how skillfully you helped navigate her back to emotional safety. I admire you for many reasons, Bob, but most of all for the servant leadership you faithfully delivered to your dear wife. May you find solace and joy in knowing that your beautiful bride is safely abiding in her Bridegroom.
