St.Clair O. Maynard Sr.'s Obituary
Mr. St.Clair Oliver Maynard Sr. was born on January 15, 1925 in Manhattan, New York to Dorothy and Godfrey Maynard. Shortly afterwards, the family moved to Bermuda. Upon graduating from high school, St.Clair returned to New York City. However, he continued on to Connecticut to reside with an aunt and uncle in Bridgeport. He obtained employment with General Electric.
St.Clair was drafted and went into the Navy. After completing his tour of duty, he returned to Connecticut. He continued his employment with General Electric. After this return, he met a young lady who became the love of his life. Miss Margaret Watson was in town visiting an aunt. They were married on May 15th 1949 this May would have been the Maynard’s 70th wedding anniversary.
Throughout the many years of living in Connecticut, St.Clair was a member of The First Baptist Church of Stratford. He loved the Lord and would spend hours discussing biblical doctrine with friends. Also, he served as president of the Stoney Brook Co-operative where he lived. St.Clair enjoyed playing Bingo, playing cards and solving crossword puzzles. He was fond of singing and dancing.
In 1947, St.Clair and 10 other WWII veterans of Col. Charles Young Post, 140 American Legion in Bridgeport, Connecticut formed a social club called “The Eldorado Club” Inc. It was well known for gatherings in town. In 1970, the club started an annual scholarship dance called “The Old Timers Dance”. This event was by invitation only. Scholarships were given in increments of five hundred dollars. This increased to one thousand dollars over the years. Scholarships were given for over forty years. St.Clair held positions of President, Vice President, or Secretary at varying times. With St.Clair’s passing, all the original members are now deceased.
St.Clair participated in service to his country. St.Clair retired from G.E. after 42 years. St.Clair shared the doctrines of his church. St.Clair volunteered service to his community. St.Clair was a contributor to life.
St.Clair was preceded in death by his brothers, Ernest (Ernie) and Charles (Eric), as well as his special sisters, Gladys Allen and Lois Brown-Evans
St.Clair leaves to mourn: Wife, Margaret; daughter, Angella Smith of Chester, Virginia; Son and daughter-in-law, St.Clair Maynard Jr. and Sharon of Palm Harbor, FL.; Grandchildren, Dwight Smith and wife Beth of Kansas City, MO., Nana Smith of Virginia, Sabrina Alston and husband Jermaine of Riverview, FL, Charlene Rochester of Riverview, FL,; Great Grandchildren, Darrin, Maceo, Adima, Naliah of Chester, Virginia, Arron Lloyd of New York, Imani Plummer and husband Sean of Ansonia, CT., Nah’Yomi Rochester of Orlando, FL, Antonio Alston of Riverview, FL; Great Great Grandchildren; Amina Short and Sean Plummer of Ansonia, CT; and a host of nephews, nieces and cousins.
