Berfield, Sue Ann Mautz was called home Saturday, October 19, 2024. Born in Freemont, Ohio Sue was a vibrant and unique mixture of grace under pressure, sincere kindness and quite unwavering strength. She was full of joy and always eager to help, specifically those less fortunate.
Sue was the eldest of four children. After a six (6) month courtship that started with an invitation to a Propeller Club dinner that James “Jim” Berfield and Sue worked on planning for the company they worked at, Sue married Jim on December 29, 1962. Sue and Jim settled in Clearwater in 1972. While both were born northerners they felt and conducted themselves with the charm, politeness and hospitality of true southerners.
As a mother of two girls, she appreciated the need to nurture and care for them physically, emotionally and spiritually. Ensuring they grew up to be strong, compassionate and spiritually founded ladies. The foundation she laid was set by both limits and love. Providing freedom and security to allow them to thrive in their differing life journeys and develop a realistic image of God and love for Him.
Sue sacrificed not only for her family, but also for her community by serving as a Clearwater City Commissioner, in community, church, nonprofit and political organization leadership roles throughout her life. Juggling her family, work and community demands, she never complained at her unenviable task, nor did she ever turn anyone away – be it family, friends or local faces, wanting to stop by the house for a quick chat. Sue served for over 20 years in the Florida legislative process working with Senators Latvala & Sebesta as well as Representatives Frishe, Hooper and Latvala.
One of Sue’s passions was reading, and another was enjoying the peacefulness of a colorful watercolors of fall.
Sue considered the best job that God ever blessed her with was being a grandmother to Kaitlyn McCoy Nicholas and James McCoy. Her love for them ran as deep as her faith in God.
While her death leaves us with heartache, her loving and compassionate memories can never be taken.
