Susan Hancher Grayshaw's Obituary
Susan was born August 8,1943, in New Rochelle, New York, and grew up in nearby Pelham, New York. She and her husband Jim moved to Florida in 2016 from Queens, New York. Susan was an Elementary School teacher at private schools before she retired in 2007. She was a cradle Episcopalian and attended St Alfred Episcopal Church here in Palm Harbor.
Susan was a voracious reader of various types of books. She especially liked Georges Simenon, Anthony Trollope, Georgette Heyer, Erle Stanley Gardner, and John Galsworthy. She attended Endicott College in Salem, Massachusetts, New York University, and Queens College. She loved working with young children Pre-K and K. She was a member of several hereditary societies- the Caledesi Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (she served on the Literacy Committee), Colonial Dames of America (the Parent Chapter), Colonial Dames XVII Century (Berkeley Plantation Chapter), the Mayflower Society (Bradford Colony), and Daughters of Founders and Patriots. She was a Board member of the Greater Pinellas Democratic Club until illness took away her ability to be an active member. She was a Board member of the Palm Harbor Civic Club, and she sang with the Palm Harbor Community Chorus. She loved sailing, and as a teenager she owned a sailboat she named Powderpuff. She and Jim were married in 1980.
Susan was preceded in death by her father Dr. Kenneth G. Hancher and her mother Marguerite L. Austin. Susan is survived by her husband James R. Grayshaw; her sister Lawren A. Hancher; her children Tonya, Julia, David and John; their spouses Carolyn, Eileen and Chris: her grandsons Henry, Lucas, and Arthur; and her aunt Evelyn Tuttle of Houston, Texas.
Susan was beloved by her family and many friends and will be truly missed. She was a very special woman with a warm smile. She brought joy to all the people she met.
A Funeral for Susan to be held on August 10, 2024, at 11 AM at St Alfred's Episcopal Church, 1601 Curlew Road, Palm Harbor FL 34683. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
