Walter Scott Young Jr.'s Obituary
Walter S. Young, Jr., 92, died March 16, 2017, in Clearwater FL. He was born July 20, 1924 in Bayside, NY, where he graduated from Bayside High School. An Army veteran of World War II, he was awarded the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart medal and was a Prisoner of War; having fought with the 422nd infantry division and captured in the Battle of the Bulge.
Walter returned to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, where he earned his B.C.E. in 1948. He was a member of the Upsilon Chapter of Delta Tau Delta fraternity and played on one of the country’s leading collegiate lacrosse teams. Walter continued to play lacrosse professionally on the Toledo Selzer Motors team as one the few Americans in the league. He worked in marketing and new business development management positons with a number of major corporations, including Owens-Corning Fiberglass and Union Carbide, before retiring to The Landings in Savannah, Georgia. An avid golfer, with two holes-in-one to his credit, he belonged to the Eagles Golf Club in Odessa, Florida, the Landings Club, the Toledo Country Club in Ohio, and the Hills of Lakeway in Austin, Texas.
Walter married Marjorie Cosh, who survives him, in 1951. He is survived by three children, W. Scott Young III MD/PhD, Ellen Y. McClain JD/LLM, Shelley A. Young MD, and eight grandchildren. They lived in Toledo, OH; Houston, TX; Greenwich and Darien, CT; Savannah, GA; and The Eagles, Odessa, FL. He was active in community causes including Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity and Golden K. of Skidaway Kiwanis. He was also a member of Hope Presbyterian Church in Clearwater, FL.
Funeral services will be private with internment at West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, PA. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions in his name to the charity of their choice.
