Warren "Bob" Chalmers Steele, age 96, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2026.
Born on November 19, 1929, in Rahway, New Jersey, Bob witnessed nearly a century of change and progress. Throughout his life, he remained curious about the world around him, embracing new experiences, exploring distant places, and pursuing interests that ranged from aviation and automobile racing to history, travel, and writing. He possessed an extraordinary knowledge of history and current events and delighted in sharing stories, insights, and firsthand memories from the many decades he lived through.
Bob devoted 36 years of his professional career to Chrysler Corporation, where he worked in Engineering and Cost Planning. He was respected for his analytical mind, strong work ethic, and commitment to excellence. Throughout his career and retirement, he remained curious, engaged, and always eager to learn.
During his years with Chrysler, Bob and his family made their home in Birmingham, Michigan, while creating countless memories at their year-round cottage on beautiful Walloon Lake. In retirement, Bob and his wife, Carlie, embraced a life shared between two places they cherished, wintering in Dunedin, Florida, and summering in Petoskey, Michigan, where they enjoyed the companionship of family, neighbors, and lifelong friends.
Above all else, Bob was devoted to his important family members. He shared a loving life with his wife, Carlie Ellen Steele, and took great pride in the family they built together. He is survived by his son, Rick Steele; daughter-in-law, Wendy Steele; grandchildren Brooke, Jake, Stephen, Alex, and Hailey; and his beloved grand-dog, Gracie. His love, wisdom, and guidance will continue to live on through each of them.
Known as the ultimate handyman, Bob could seemingly fix, build, or improve just about anything. He approached every challenge with patience, creativity, and determination. Long before he settled into married life, Bob pursued his passion for adventure and engineering. He enjoyed two memorable periods of aircraft ownership, flying his prized Luscombe 8A throughout the Midwest and embracing the freedom and exhilaration of personal aviation. His love of performance and precision also extended to the racetrack, where he raced Porsche 356A automobiles and at one time owned three of these iconic sports cars. He was also an accomplished world traveler whose adventures took him to many parts of the globe, creating lifelong friendships wherever he went. Whether meeting someone for the first time or reconnecting with an old friend, Bob had a gift for making people feel welcome and valued.
In his later years, Bob dedicated time to writing his memoirs, preserving a lifetime of experiences, lessons, and memories for future generations. Through his writings, stories, and conversations, he shared not only the events of his life but also the wisdom he gained along the way.
Those who knew Bob will remember his intelligence, kindness, resourcefulness, sense of humor, and genuine interest in others. He leaves behind a legacy of love, friendship, curiosity, and perseverance that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Though his family mourns his passing, they celebrate an extraordinarily well lived life. Bob's legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, the stories he shared, the lessons he taught, and the family he loved so deeply. He will be missed, lovingly remembered, and forever present in the hearts of those who knew him.
Bob is survived by his son, Rick Steele; daughter-in-law, Wendy Steele; grandchildren Brooke, Jake, Stephen, Alex, and Hailey; and his beloved grand-dog, Gracie. He is also survived by Lisa Sohmer and Tony Doblin, dear friends who are family.
