William Christian Thein, Jr.
On January 26, 2024, William Christian Thein, Jr., passed away peacefully at the age of 91. Bill was surrounded lovingly by his wife, Joann, son, Randy Thein (Cathee), and daughter, Kimberly Ann Lochner (David). Bill is survived by four grandchildren, Michael Crognale (Jenn), Michael Thein (Lauren), Julie Schanzenbach (Brian), and Lisa Thein, two great grandsons, Weston and Cameron Crognale, and his sister Kathy Glencer. Bill is pre-deceased by his parents William C. Thein, Sr., and Johanna Lillian Thein (nee Lutz) and his sister JoAnne Ott.
Born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, Bill married and raised his family there before moving to Clearwater Beach, FL in 1990. He and Joann recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army at age 18 and served honorably in the Korean War attaining the rank of Sergeant. Upon completion of his service he earned a degree in Business and worked as an Accountant for U.S. Steel Corporation until his retirement.
Bill was a highly accomplished chess player in high school. He was undefeated his senior year and was lauded as one of the best players ever. Bill and Joann enjoyed Saturday night dancing with friends for many years. He also enjoyed investing in real estate and bought and sold many properties. Bill was an avid walker. He had a quick wit and maintained his sense of humor to the end.
A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, January 31, 2:00 p.m. at St.Brendan's Catholic Church, 245 Dory Passage, Island Estates, Clearwater, FL 33767. Visitation will be just prior to Mass at 1:15 p.m.
Bill was a supporter of many charities. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice or toward a Mass card.
