Aline (Mitchell) Stem's Obituary
Aline M. Stem was born on September 30th, 1921 in Pine Bluff Arkansas. She was the daughter of the late Wiley M. Mitchell and Anna Mae Donovan Mitchell. Mrs. Stem graduated from Pine Bluff High School in 1939. Following high school, she attended and graduated from the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis with a degree in Nursing. While working in the infectious disease ward at University Hospital in Memphis, she cared for a handsome medical student suffering from the Measles. He became the love of her life for 64 years the late Dr. James Marion Stem. The Stems settled in Clearwater in 1948 when Dr. Stem opened Clearwater's first Pediatric practice. Mrs. Stem spent many years in Clearwater engaged in service to her community while raising her family. Through her work with the Clearwater Junior League, she helped to organize and serve as the first Director of Play Parc School for handicapped children. Play Parc in later years grew into UPARC for special needs children and adults. Mrs. Stem also served on the Board of Directors for the Clearwater YWCA, as well as the Morton Plant Hospital Auxiliary. The Stem's moved to the United Arab Emirates in 1980 when Dr. Stem assumed the position of Pediatric Director of Tawam Hospital. While in the Emirates, Mrs. Stem served the hospital by assisting new employees acclimating into their new environment. In later years when the Stem's settled in Citrus County, Mrs. Stem worked with the Historical Society during the courthouse renovations and was instrumental in the procurement of many historical artifacts. Mrs. Stem loved to travel around the world with family and friends as well as idyllic hours fishing and exploring with her beloved husband, children and grandchildren. Her four children survive Mrs. Stem: James Mitchell of Tampa, Richard Barry of Ocala, Michael Andrew of Longwood, and Elizabeth Allison Wheaton of Jefferson, Ga. Mrs. Stem leaves eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. There will be a funeral mass celebrated Friday 10:30 a.m at St. Cecelia Catholic Church, Clearwater, FL.
