I was the lucky guy that took Cheryl Mattingly to my Junior Prom at Cathedral High way, way back in 1959. She was the prettiest girl there for sure. Wish I could have seen her again and met her husband and family, in that all these years later ,I never knew they were in Clearwater....(I live in Tampa.) My brother was a friend of one of her younger brothers (Stephen). So sorry for your loss.
I was very saddened to learn today that Cheryl had died just a short time ago. Cheryl and I were friends at St. Philip Neri Grade School and Scecina Memorial High School. We spent lots of time together during our grade school years, and then less as we were teenagers. However, we all loved Cheryl and her warm wit and big smile. We always hoped she would show up for one of our reunions, but that didn't happen in recent years. I can still envision her in our First Communion and Graduation photos at SPN. Just know that she grew up with lots of friends and lots of love in our Eastside community. From the beautiful obituary, it sounds like that was the case for the rest of her life. Cheryl is one of the most loving people we have ever known. We say IS because she is still with us, in our hearts, in our fondest memories, in every beautiful sunset and in the smiles of her children and grandchildren. None of us wanted to let go of the holy woman who taught us all what it means to care deeply and love unconditionally. We thank God for our faith for we know we will be with Cheryl again when the Eatons and the Tobins can tease each other about the Gators and the Seminoles, brag about our grandchildren and laugh to our heart's content. Sorry we never got to go to Hawaii, Cheryl, but we have no doubt that Heaven is even more beautiful! Maybe we'll even find you in your grass skirt! What can be said about a faithful person? a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend to so many? Cheryl's influence on so many people will live on in them and who they share it with. All the love she gave so generously will never be forgotten - only multiplied now that she is in heaven. I remember when I lost my mother in 2000 she called me everyday to check on me and gave me alot of her wise words and I will never forget the words and how thankful I was for them. I will hold them close to heart along with her always !????
