MY AUNT DOROTHY
I told Dorothy many times that she was a stable force in my childhood. I came from a family of six children. We were a loud and rambunctious group. Dorothy always welcomed us with open arms, and we knew how much she loved us.
When we were children, she would invite my sisters and me to stay with her and her husband for a few weeks in the summer. Coming from the suburbs of Chicago it was a bit of a culture shock to find ourselves in rural Wisconsin. Only fields and cows as far as we could see. We loved it. We loved the big house. We loved working the soda counter in the General Store, taking turns waiting on each other. We loved the peace and calm, but most of all we loved spending time with Dorothy. She in turn seemed to enjoy us too.
Dorothy didn’t have children of her own at that time. Maybe those summers were practice for her favorite job, being a mom. When Paul came along, it was obvious to everyone how much she loved being a mom. She was a wonderful mom and Paul in turn was a wonderful son. Paul and his family were everything to Dorothy and in return they took such good care of her, as the years went by and the caretaker roles reversed. I am so glad they were there to take care of my Aunt when she needed it.
Still Dorothy never forgot about us. She sent us birthday cards until the day she died. I only wish that circumstances would allow me to be with you to celebrate Dorothy's life. Dorothy and her family will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers.
