Gene was a very thoughtful Catholic and Christian, humble to the heart. I never saw him assume upon anyone, but rather he would be one of the first to step forward. I particularly remember a call for help to our parish Helping Hands. We were asked to help in cutting the lawn for an elderly person who was being charged by the city for not keeping the yard to minimum standards. An injury prevented the resident from yard work. There were also two large piles of yard waste at the curb. The elderly resident lived on a corner lot and had designated the wrong street for stacking the debris which the city would pick up for free - if it was in the right street. Otherwise, they would charge a sum the resident couldn’t afford. Responding to the call were the few that came for yard work but not all were able to stay for moving the debris pile. Not Gene, even though visibly exhausted he wouldn’t stop as long as the need existed. Sure, we took a few more breaks over those last hours until it was done. AND, he went back the next day to go above and beyond.
There are many more fond memories I will keep of Gene. He is in God’s hands now, and I am sure delighting the heavens with his laughter and light spirit.
May you rest in peace, Gene.
