Garneta Shannon Derian's Obituary
Garneta Shannon Derian, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2017 in Palm Harbor, FL. Born August 27, 1925 in Crown, W. VA to Dott Larkin and Mabel Lantz Shannon. Attended West Virginia Public schools, Berea College (BA degree – 1947) and the University of Utah (MA degree – 1957).
Shannon began her teaching career in West Virginia. In 1951 she moved to Salt Lake City where she taught World History. In 1957 she moved to Alexandria, Virginia where she taught American History at the new Francis C. Hammond High School. In 1971 she transferred to T.C. William High School where she taught American Civilization until she retired in 1989.
While at T.C. Williams, Shannon was chosen twice as Alexandria City Schools’ recipient for the Washington Post’s prestigious Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Award.
Shannon was a Master Teacher, a devoted friend and a loyal colleague. She will be missed.
Predeceased by her parents and her brother Robert, Shannon is survived by her godchildren Michell Cates, Christina Owens and Shannon Flater, as well as her devoted friend and caregiver Laura Pernice.
Shannon will be interred at Graham Cemetery in Orange County.
