Gwen S. Morris' Obituary
Surrounded by her family and friends, Gwen Scil Morris , age 85, died peacefully on February 23, 2017. Memories of her vibrant personality and her unique approach to life will always remain alive in those whose lives she touched.
Gwen was born April 17, 1931 in Samson, Alabama. She was the oldest of seven children born to her parents Tennie and Jonah Johnson.
In 1948 she and her husband Victor Morris (deceased) moved to Florida to work in the citrus industry. After much persuasion from Gwen, her parents and siblings moved to Florida also. In 1951 her daughter Deborah Markey was born. She was the center of Gwen’s world, and remained so, for the rest of her life. Bob, her much-loved son-in-law, was a blessing she truly relied on after Vick’s death on February 19. 2012.
After retiring from her manager of shipping position at Orange Blossom Groves, Gwen and Vick were free to enjoy traveling. Many weekends were spent camping in their motor home at various Bluegrass Festivals. Wearing her favorite boots, Gwen was frequently spotted dancing to the beat of a bluegrass song. They also enjoyed flying to wherever in the country Deborah was living and spending time with her and Bob. In Louisville, she adored the donning of a fashionable hat while attending the Kentucky Derby with Deborah. She was thrilled if she managed to pick the right horse.
She was an excellent gardener. She had a green thumb and spent many hours working in her yard and numerous flower gardens. She loved displaying yard art in her flower beds. This colorful environment was a reflection of the bright and beautiful person that she was.
Gwen is survived by her daughter Deborah and son-in-law, Bob. She is also survived by her brother E. Wayne Johnson (Elaine), and her sisters, Nell Wingate, Peggy Nickelson, Patricia Clark (Terry), Sharon Armstrong (John) and Sandra Johnson (Deanna) . She will be greatly missed by her 8 nieces and nephews and many other relatives. Her numerous friends also share deeply in her loss.
