She was born in Scobey, Montana on May 17, 1915, to Richard Nathan Powell and Eunice Helen Ripple Powell. Following several years in Kansas, in 1925 her family moved to Tampa, FL in the "boon" years. Mrs. Brincklow earned a Bachelor of Science degree from University of Tampa in 1939 and a Master of Arts degree from Florida State University in the late 60's. Her 74 year teaching career began in 1937 at Seminole Elementary School in Tampa where she taught art and music, traversed schools in Stoneham, MA and Dunedin FL most notably Dunedin Junior and Senior High Schools, and ended at the close of semester in December, 2011 where she taught one of the signature online art history courses she designed for St. Petersburg College (SPC). She taught every grade and level of student from kindergarten to college over the course of her career. In addition to her work as an instructor, she was the founder and Coordinator of the SPC International Study Programs, planning and implementing programs that coordinated college courses with travel. She escorted SPC students and many others for study in Europe for thirty years. This experience brought first hand observation that enhanced her work as an instructor in the fields of art and the humanities. Her philosophy in working with students was to treat each one as an individual. She taught the student NOT the content. She believed each student is a unique individual that she must get to know so that she could select the best way of teaching that person. It was her goal to introduce art enthusiastically. She wanted every student to enjoy the creative nature of mankind and to note that the artist's values are reflected in his or her work, and reflected the world's values at a certain time period. She believed the study of art includes much more than the recognition of visual images; understanding the language of the artist as he uses the elements (Line, Color, Space) to produce the ideas he wants to present. In 1985 she was awarded the Pinellas County Teacher of the Year for exemplary teaching. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma honor sorority for women educators with whom she forged a lifetime of friendships. With Sue Byars, Nancy Norton and Edith Dicus, Mrs. Brincklow was a co-founder of the Junior Service League of Dunedin which ultimately folded into the Junior League of Clearwater - Dunedin. Among other affiliations, she was among the first faculty of the Dunedin Fine Art Center and served as one of its earliest Board Presidents. For those she embraced, she expressed unconditional love and support. Her indomitable spirit is undeniable and lives on in each and every person she touched. She will be sorely missed by her family, friends and students, in the US and Europe. Pre-deceased by her parents, husband, S. Ralph Brincklow, and siblings, Maurine Powell Hattaway and Dr. Richard Powell, she is survived by her son Richard Brincklow (Kimberly), her daughter Elizabeth Brincklow (Zeke Durica), grandchildren Kristina Brincklow (Tracy Goar), Rose Tipitino (Nick Leibee), Joshua Brincklow and Nathan Brincklow, four great-grandchildren, Caitlyn, Lexi and Lana Goar of LaVergne TN and Josie Leibee of Deland FL, nieces Susan Hurley of Concord MA, Mary Ann Sparks (Steve) of Antioch, TN, Nancy Miller (Patrick), of Oakland, CA, Olivia Powell and Rachel Powell, both of Tallahassee, FL and nephews Jackson Brincklow of Woburn MA, Bruce Brincklow of Land O Lakes FL, Richard Hattaway (Barbara) of Salisbury NC, Win Powell of Lake Panasoffkee, Bruce Powell (Faith) of Marietta, GA, Bill Powell of Oklahoma City, OK, and a loving extended family. The family would like to thank her assistants Jaimee Drake (US), Patricia Hill (FR), and Sevim Klein (TR) for their loving and outstanding work. Donations may be made to Dunedin Fine Art Center for student scholarships.
